MARS Insight SP: Overcoming Engineering Challenges
Featuring Ian Standley, Kinemetrics, Inc.
What happens when you decide to send a seismometer to Mars? There’s only one way to find out!
In this session, Ian Standley will take us through the exciting Mars Insight project from the standpoint of the engineering team from Imperial College, Oxford University, and Kinemetrics tasked with developing a new seismometer that could withstand the harsh conditions of space and the surface of Mars.
He will discuss some of the engineering challenges and opportunities associated with this incredible project, and share his experience of seeing the team’s work reach the surface of another planet! Ian will talk about the deployment of the seismometer onto the surface and its operation on the planet. Finally he’ll discuss future potential missions to put seismometers on our own moon and possibly the “Icy moons of Jupiter”.
This informative webinar + Q&A will provide an engaging and informative view into the engineering processes used to overcome challenging conditions, and give the audience an entertaining back-stage view into the Mars Insight SP project, and the story of the rock named, “The Ace of Spades”.
