Performance Assessment and Structural Health Monitoring of Large Dams
Featuring Dr. André Alegre, Kinemetrics, Inc.
Large concrete dams are infrastructures of vital importance for populations, contributing decisively to the management of freshwater resources, particularly for water supply, energy production, flood control and soil irrigation, especially nowadays due to the effects of climate change.
However, these dams are usually high potential risk structures, designed to operate for several decades, and often located in seismic zones. It is essential to conduct a continuous and reliable assessment of dam behavior, which can be affected by progressive deterioration or by damage caused due to extreme events (such as earthquakes or overtopping), in order to control structural health over time and ensure optimal operating conditions.
In this session, special guest speaker Dr. André Alegre will discuss how a continuous vibrations monitoring system represents an important asset for performance assessment and structural health monitoring of large dams.
Dr. Alegre will share the experience acquired over the past 15 years in two real-world case studies. His presentation will cover the development of the dams’ monitoring systems, present results from several applications, and describe how the KMIDam platform helps make dam monitoring reliable and effective.
