When the USGS launched a world-wide search for unprecedented new seismographic technology to capture the performance of the Streckeisen STS-1 Very Broad Band seismometer for deep borehole applications, only one team had that technology and answered the call.
The Streckeisen STS-6A Ultra-High Performance Borehole Seismometer - a product of the continued technical collaboration between Streckeisen, GmbH and Kinemetrics, Inc. - meets and exceeds the previously unequalled benchmark set more than three decades ago by the STS-1.
After a rigorous public procurement and evaluation of the STS-6A, the USGS has let the largest contract for sensors in the history of the Global Seismographic Network (GSN). The STS-6A is the only sensor meeting the USGS’s requirements for the GSN, continuing the legacy of excellence set by the STS-1. The new sensors will take on the role of Primary sensors in many GSN stations.
